August 31, 2016 - Almost September, and the antelope rutting season isn't far away now.  Early this morning this buck was busy making a scrape and marking his territory out in front of the house.  It wasn't too many years ago we didn't have antelope around here.

August 30, 2016 - This baby Prairie Rattlesnake in the driveway last evening had only one button and couldn't rattle even though he vigorously shook his tail.  He was less than 12" long; a very robust little snake.  Today is my one year retirement anniversary.  This is my 366th post.

August 23, 2016 - Last night after dark I was spraying a hornet's nest high up in one of the aspen trees in the back yard.  I left the ladder in place because I didn't want to fuss with it in the dark.  So this morning...

August 22, 2016 - More photos of Saturday's bull moose.

Sunday, August 21, 2016

August 21, 2016 - Yesterday morning before sunrise we had a big bull moose in the yard.  He literally denuded all the golden willow leaves below ten feet high in the trees.  He would grab a branch with his mouth and strip the leaves down the branch until at the end he had a mouth full of leaves.  He seldom dropped a leaf.  The big fellow was here feeding on the willows for an hour and twenty minutes until the sun made it into the yard.  When he headed over to the new lilac hedge we are trying to grow, I ran him off.  I made these photos after the sun came up.  I will post some more tomorrow.  Moose are amazingly large animals!  This is a good place to live.

August 8, 2016 - An American Kestrel.  I feel like this was a young bird because he seemed to be curious about me.  I was very pleased with the clarity of this photo.

August 7, 2016 - These are my two favorite pictures from the trailcam this week; a cow moose and a coyote, both at night.

Saturday, August 6, 2016

August 6, 2016 - The wild Chokecherries (purple) and Buffaloberries (red) are doing well this summer.  The birds are enjoying the chokecherries around the yard.  The wild plums do not look nearly as prolific this year.  They won't be ripe for another couple of weeks, so we shall see.

August 5, 2016 - This cow moose was feeding on the willow leaves right beside the truck in the driveway yesterday evening.  I noted the height of her shoulder compared to the truck window and this morning measured the height to the window.  The moose is about 5'-9" tall at the shoulder.  That would make her head well over 7' tall.  I think she is about 6" taller than a good sized saddle horse.  These are big animals; especially noticeable when you can see their entire leg down to the hoof.  This morning she was lingering in the woods down by the creek; no calf.
